Memorial Day 2010

We got all our yardwork done on Saturday so that we could enjoy our Memorial Day. It began with a proper observance of the day. Our family went along with my parents to visit my grandparents' graves.
Jason and I love being given the opportunity to stress the importance of heritage to our children. It also provides some wonderful chances to talk about our beliefs on afterlife, family, eternity, etc. And, we always get to remind the girls how important it is to practice safety rules around the road when visiting my sweet Aunt Paula's grave.
I think lots of these lessons really sunk in this year. The girls were very tender and attentive; particularly when talking to my mom about her mom.
It was a beautiful day and also a happy time. The girls each had their favorite parts! Sara and Laura both loved the flowers and being able to help in any way they could with cleaning and decorating the headstones.

Eliza loved being outside and having lots of arms to hold her!
After visiting graves, Jason went to "Iron Man 3" with his buddy Andrew and I stayed home with a screaming, stubborn Sara. And, I made the sides for the neighbor BBQ we attended that night.

The BBQ was a grand time. All our close neighbors have only young girls as well. So we are really in the same stage of life and get along beautifully. The kids rode bikes and played like crazy while we adults laughed. (I forgot my camera) Oh, and Jason discovered his new favorite salad: Krab Salad.
Krab (and Shrimp) Salad:
14 oz pre-cooked imitation crabmeat (or krab and pre-cooked salad shrimp)
1/4 C cucumber, peeled and chopped fine
2 small green onions chopped fine (green and white parts)
2 T lemon juice
1/2 tsp dried dill weed
1/2 tsp salt
dash of pepper
1/2 C Mayo

Place chopped cucumber and green onion in bowl. Roughly chop seafood into bit-sized pieces and place in bowl on top of veggies. Pour lemon juice over seafood. Sprinkle on dill, salt and pepper. Lightly stir in Mayo. Serve with Ritz crackers or alone.
